This is an extremely rare wooden artist brush from the Meiji Period (approximately 1865-1870). The entire wood barrel and cap are decorated using the Raden Maki-e technique and coated with lacquer. Each piece of abalone shell was cut with precision and carefully arranged to resemble a field of flowers. The finishing touch is a solid piece of Jade stone in a cabochon cut, embedded into the top of the cap.

The brush does not appear to have ever been used, however, there are some slight blemishes from age. The wood had a crack that was filled by the previous owner and a few abalone pieces are missing. We did our best to show these imperfections in the photographs.

This rare antique wooden brush utilizes the time-honored maki-e technique of using crest and shells inlaid within the brush. Crafted with exquisite detail, it makes for a unique and beautiful addition to any collection. Utilizing a similar technique used on Pilot Namiki, Sailor, Taccia, and Platinum Pens.
