In Japanese culture the house is seen as an extension of nature. It is seen as a place to unify with nature and live harmoniously with it. This philosophy is apparent with the architecture and style of the house. A window is a medium through which nature and people connect. Marumado is a circular window and serves as a gateway for spiritual awakening and enlightenment. Hanamaru is a combination of the word hana (floral) and maru (circle). It embodies scenes of nature seen through a marumado window.

In Japanese culture an empty window is a mirror of the mind and people who look through this window can spiritually imagine about their loved ones, their life and their own future. In our desire to create a Hanamaru with Western culture, we suggested flowers and birds associated with the West.
The artist Yutaka Hashino selected the Thistle to represent the flowers; the Goldfinch and Kingfisher are two of the birds. He also felt the empty windows enhance the composition. The resultant Maki-E design is exquisite and unique. It is a symbiotic composition of Western nature elements seen through the Eastern culture of Hanamaru.
The canvas for this composition is the Classic Legend™ oversize pen. It is handmade by the craftsman Paul Rossi using red marble acrylic. The artist Yutaka Hashino used the red marble color as the background for the windows. The red color harmonizes with the gold dust and black background, to enhance the composition.
The techniques employed are: Togidashi-Maki-E with gold dust as the base; Taka Maki-E with the raised flowers and birds; Raden with the pearl inlay of the Kingfisher plumage.
