The collection is available in multiple dazzling colors: a translucent mossy black (negro), a
pure white (blanco), a brilliant shade of orange (naranja), a buttery but vibrant saffron (amarillo), a radiant red (rojo), and a calming olive hue (avocado, a word derived from the Aztec word āhuacatl).
Each variation reveals the intricate engravings of flowers and skulls shadowed in low relief. The David Oscarson Dia de los Muertos Collection is limited in production to 74 aggregate fountain pens and rollerballs in each color. The “7” refers to the traditional number of levels on an altar, each step a representation of the Aztec belief in the seven levels of the underworld that a soul must travel to achieve ultimate peace in the afterlife.
The idea is another melding of such Aztec mythos (the multitiered Mictlan, or subterranean underworld) with Catholic components. The “4” is a nod to the four primary natural elements–wind (viento), water (agua), fire (fuego), and earth (tierra)—that are also each depicted on an ofrenda during Día de los Muertos festivities.
Día de los Muertos, the holiday, is a symphony of cultures; a commemoration of what preceded this complicated holiday’s current harmonious observance; a celebration of what remains and what is eternal; an index of history, and the interweaving of different belief systems.
The David Oscarson Dia de los Muertos Collection is far more than the heartbreakingly beautiful piece of art the writer admires. It is a reminder of arguably the most essential truth we as humans cherish: El amor nunca muere. Love never dies.
