The essentiality and strength of the drawings expressing so well the salient phases in the life of the statesmen and the political evolution of South Africa had to be combined - in full respect of the spirit of the artists who had conceived and reproduced them on paper - with the style of OMAS, clearly recognizable in every model. There are four themes: Birth of Royalty (Mandela belongs to the Tembu royal family), the Struggle, New Nation, and Africa.
A historical journey from Birth, represented by the gentle image of the mother cradling her baby while in the distance the huts, river, and two large suns evoke a sense of peace and serenity, to the Struggle, a succession of shields, rendered aggressive and emblematic by the red of the resin which acts as a base for the precious metal and enamel. In New Nation, people representing al the races in South Africa are dancing hand in hand to celebrate the victory of democracy.
The series ends with a great Africa occupied and completely dominated by a prone figure. The rough surface of the continent contrasts with the glossy figure, while the orange and yellow enamels, in harmony with the beautiful rising runs which frame the scene, heighten the luminosity. Various tones of gold, silver, platinum, and diamonds skillfully combined with enamel and vegetable resins in specially created colours are used to produce these miniature masterpieces.
Each fountain pen in the collection is equipped with a beautiful two-toned 18kt gold nib and a solid piston filling system. Its length and weight are comfortably balanced, measuring at 172mm open and 139mm closed. This yellow gold edition was limited to 400 pieces worldwide.
Nelson Mandela’s legacy extends far beyond his role in ending apartheid. Known for his resilience and commitment to justice, Mandela spent 27 years in prison before becoming South Africa's first Black president in 1994. His vision of peace and reconciliation transformed the nation and inspired the world. A Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Mandela’s dedication to human rights, equality, and freedom resonates globally, making this pen set a true tribute to his enduring impact and spirit.
