The arrival of the America's Cup in Europe after more than a century and a half has inspired the organizers (representing the defending sailing club) to make substantial modifications to the rules of the contest. The preliminary stages of the 32nd America's Cup took place in 2006 in a series of events preparing for the great challenge which was held in 2007 in the waters of Valencia, off the eastern coast of Spain. The other great innovation is the introduction of fleet races, complementing the so-called match races, which, in the tradition of the America's cup, are one-on-one duels. It is this event which Montegrappa has decided to celebrate with its Fleet Race Limited Edition.
The mast is the structural element which has inspired the form of the Fleet Race Limited Edition. The special design of the clip and the vertical bars enhancing the barrel recall the streamlined outline of a yacht's mast, while the design of the cap takes the hull as its model.
Cap and barrel are lacquered with non-slip rubber finishing (black for the silver version and anthracite grey for the yellow gold models). The end part of the barrel is decorated with the logos of the America's Cup.
Fleet Race is available in sterling silver as fountain pen (1851 pieces as the year of the first edition of the America's Cup) and as rollerball pen (800 pieces recalling the average total square meters sail area of a modern America's Cup boat) and in 18K yellow gold as fountain pen (204 pieces as the total number of crew members: 12 yachts x 17 men each) and as rollerball pen (32 pieces to commemorate this 32nd edition of the America's Cup).
