China's most glamorous and complex metropolis at the banks of the Huangpu with its 14 million inhabitants took off for the 21st century with breathtaking speed. Called "city without night" by the Chinese, Shanghai-which means "at the sea" before the first Opium war (1840-1842) was a flourishing, but not very important little town of weavers and fishermen. The economic upswing begun afterwards. In the Twenties and Forties of the 20th century, Shanghai already had the highest buildings in Asia.
